Engaging and Respecting Autism: A Pathway to Understanding and Engaging Individuals with Autism from a DIR® Perspective

Engaging and Respecting Autism: What is it and how do I do it?  This course examines how using a respectful and engaging developmental and relationship-based approach promotes human development.  This is about much more than simply training individuals on the autism spectrum to learn discrete skills.  You will learn the key to helping individuals with autism become motivated from within (an intrinsic desire) to engage, relate, communicate and learn.

This course examines the importance of social relationships and cultural competency as they relate to the therapeutic relationship.  Participants learn how a developmentally based model of care, including consideration of individual differences, the perspective of the client, and specific techniques, all serve to strengthen the therapeutic relationship and support growth and development.

DIR® is an approach to help individuals communicate better with their environment. It was developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan to help promote each person's development to its fullest potential.  It is an incredibly powerful approach to help people with Autism relate, communicate, think, and learn.  It aims to meet people at their level of development and build on their strengths and abilities by creating opportunities for interactions and building relationships with people who are important in the their life. This course will explore specific strategies for truly engaging and respecting a person with Autism in treatment and identify specific reasons why this is so effective as well as respectful.

Don't train a child to learn by force or harshness, but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of genius of each. –Plato
